Baby's Development: Week 39: Baby Continues to Develop

Baby's Development

The grand finale is so close! Boys tend to be a bit heavier than girls, so if you're having a boy, he might be weighing in at around 3.2 kg (7 pounds) by now. Girls will be slightly less. The average length is 49 cm (19.3 inches). Your little one is still accumulating those crucial fat stores, which will help them regulate their body temperature and maintain stable sugar levels after birth. Their lungs are almost fully ready to take their first breath of air – a monumental moment! This week, your little one will secrete more stress hormones during birth than at any other time in their life. These hormones will help them manage their bodily systems independently, without the support of your placenta. It's an incredible transition! The lungs continue to develop and are still working hard to produce surfactant, the substance that keeps the air sacs from collapsing when they take that first, magnificent breath. Right after that initial deep breath comes baby’s first cry—a beautiful sound that signals they are breathing well! The baby's crown-to-rump length is 36-37 cm (14.2-14.6 inches), and they weigh between 3200-3250 grams (7-7.2 pounds). Their skin is pink and smooth now, ready for cuddles and kisses. If the baby's head is not downward (breech), a cesarean birth may be necessary.
