Baby's Development: Week 21: Baby Sleeps and Wakes Regularly

Baby's Development

Your baby now weighs about 300 grams (10.5 ounces) and measures around 16 cm (6.3 inches) from crown to rump. They are covered in vernix caseosa, a protective, white, waxy substance that helps to waterproof the skin and protect it from infection. The baby is swallowing more amniotic fluid this week, practicing for their digestive system's work after birth. The inner ear bones have formed, making the ear more recognizable. Your baby is developing a regular pattern of sleeping and waking. You'll likely notice their awake periods through their movements – kneading, kicking, and turning. Their brain is developing nerve centers, and their senses are becoming more active. They are more responsive to your activity, environmental sounds, and even the taste of the amniotic fluid. The baby has developed hiccups, which are harmless. Lanugo, the fine hair covering the body, is being replaced by real hair, which will be lighter in color and will continue to grow after birth. The fetal heartbeat can now be heard with a fetoscope. The baby's skin is becoming less transparent. They can grasp objects with their hands.
