Baby's Development: Week 38: Baby is Ready for Birth

Baby's Development

Your precious cargo now weighs close to 2.9 kilograms (6.4 pounds) and may be over 50 cm (19.7 inches) long from head to toe! The grand arrival is so close! It's said that 85% of babies are born within two weeks of their due date, so you'll likely meet your little one within the next four weeks. The baby has almost completely lost the vernix caseosa (that protective, creamy coating) and the lanugo (those fine, downy hairs). They might even have a proper head of hair now—though not all babies sport a mane at birth. Any time now! Braxton Hicks contractions might be becoming more intense as your body prepares for the real deal. Your baby continues to lay down fat, getting ready for life outside the womb. Their bowel is full of meconium, a sticky, greenish-black substance that will be their first bowel movement after birth. It's a sign that their digestive system is working perfectly! The baby's crown-to-rump length is 35-36 cm (13.8-14.2 inches), and they weigh between 3000-3100 grams (6.6-6.8 pounds). Baby girls may have a pink or mucousy vaginal discharge during the first few days after birth due to maternal hormones.
