The Idols We Carry: Releasing What Holds Us Back
The Idols We Carry: Releasing What Holds Us Back "You shall have no other gods before or besides Me." - Exodus 20:3 (AMPC) The story of Rachel in Genesis offers a powerful, albeit cautionary, tale about the dangers of idolatry. We find her stealing her father's household idols, even going so far as to sit on them and lie about their whereabouts (Genesis 31:34-35). This act, seemingly small, reveals a deeper struggle within her. Rachel's actions weren't just a simple theft. She was married to Jacob, a man in covenant with God, whose life was a testament to God's prophetic promises. Yet, Rachel came from a background steeped in idol worship. Her father, Laban, from Haran, possessed household idols believed to bring blessings or reveal hidden knowledge. Rachel was a product of this environment, a society where such practices were commonplace. We might ask: What compelled her to steal these idols? Was it a reluctance to let go of familiar traditions? A lack of complete faith in Jacob's God? A desire to have a "backup plan," a form of spiritual insurance? Rachel's story highlights the double-mindedness that can plague us. She was connected to Jacob's covenant with God, yet she clung to the idols of her past. This divided allegiance ultimately had tragic consequences. Despite struggling to conceive, Rachel eventually bore Joseph and Benjamin. However, she died giving birth to her second son, a devastating loss. The womb, a sacred gateway of life, should be guarded and kept pure, like a sanctuary. Rachel's defilement of this sacred space, her refusal to relinquish her idols, tragically contributed to a curse and her untimely death. This raises a crucial question for us: What idols are we still clinging to that defile our own "wombs," our sources of life and fruitfulness? Some physical ailments and conditions can even be linked to these spiritual strongholds and curses. Rachel's story is a poignant reminder of the cost of divided loyalties. She died between two altars: the altar of her father's house and the altar of her husband's. A tragic end for a remarkable love story. Benjamin, her son, became Jacob's favorite after Joseph was sold into slavery. Many of us can relate to Rachel's struggle. Some are first-generation Christians, grappling with belief systems ingrained from childhood. I myself experienced this. Before knowing Jesus, fear dominated my life, and even after accepting Him, fear continued to haunt me. But through time and God's grace, I learned to forsake the idols of my ancestors and turn my undivided devotion to Yahweh. You can too. Take God at His word. Renouncing past beliefs and practices is essential for our spiritual growth. Don't let the accuser use your past against you. A Prayer for Release: Father, I repent of all forms of idolatry. I confess that I have sinned against you. I acknowledge the idols I have carried over from my family's traditions into my Christian walk—Father, forgive me. I now come under the blood of Jesus, asking for your forgiveness. Today, I release every idol I have placed before you. I have sinned greatly against you. Lord, I ask that you wash me anew with the blood of Jesus, which speaks of better things. I rededicate my life and my "womb" (my source of life and fruitfulness) back to you, asking that you be the center of it all. In the name of Yeshua, Amen.
